Why Salvage/Rebuilt Vehicles Need Certified Appraisals
Vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles present some of the most challenging valuation scenarios in auto appraisal. Standard book values simply don't apply — a salvage-title vehicle is worth substantially less than a clean-title equivalent, but exactly how much less depends on the nature of the damage, quality of repairs, state titling requirements, and local market conditions.
Salvage vs. Rebuilt Title
- Salvage Title: Issued when an insurance company declares a vehicle a total loss. The vehicle has not been inspected or approved for road use after repair. Value is typically 30–50% of clean-title equivalent.
- Rebuilt Title: Issued after a salvage vehicle has been repaired and passed state inspection. Value is typically 20–40% less than clean-title equivalent, depending on the nature of original damage and quality of repairs.
Appraisal Considerations
- Repair Quality: A certified appraiser inspects the actual repairs — not just the title history — to assess whether work was done properly
- Safety Systems: Were airbags, ADAS sensors, and safety systems properly restored? This affects both value and safety.
- Insurance Limitations: Many insurers won't offer comprehensive or collision coverage on salvage titles, affecting the vehicle's utility and value
- Financing Challenges: Most banks and credit unions won't finance salvage-title vehicles, and rebuilt-title financing comes with restrictions
- State Variation: Each state has different rules for salvage and rebuilt titles, affecting market value and transferability
When You Need a Salvage/Rebuilt Appraisal
- Pre-purchase — verify the asking price reflects the title status accurately
- Insurance documentation — getting proper coverage requires documented value
- Financing — lenders who will finance rebuilt titles need certified valuations
- Divorce and estate — courts need professional valuations for title-branded vehicles
