How to Verify an Auto Appraiser’s Certification

Why this matters for your claim

When you dispute a diminished value offer, invoke an appraisal clause on a total loss, or hand an appraisal to an umpire, the appraiser’s credentials are part of the evidence. Adjusters and opposing appraisers routinely check them. If your appraiser claimed a certification they do not hold, the other side can use that to attack the entire report — and you may have paid for an appraisal that carries little weight.

Step 1: Ask “certified by whom?”

“Certified” is not a credential by itself. A legitimate appraiser can tell you, immediately and in writing, the name of the organization that certified them and their certification number. Vague answers such as “I’m certified in Texas” or “I’ve been certified for years” are a warning sign. Any real certification comes from a named organization you can check.

Step 2: Verify directly with the organization

Do not rely on a logo, a badge image, or a statement on the appraiser’s own website. Go to the certifying organization and look the person up. For ASCAA, use the free ASCAA Certification Lookup. Every current ASCAA Certified Auto Appraiser is listed there with a certification number. If someone claims ASCAA certification and is not listed, they are not ASCAA certified.

Step 3: Check the details match

• The name on the certification matches the person who will sign your report.
• The business name and location match what you were told.
• The certification is current, not lapsed.

Step 4: Watch for other red flags

• Years-in-business claims that change from page to page.
• Listing a former employer or another firm as though it were their own credential.
• Reluctance to put credentials in writing on the report.
• No USPAP statement and no signed certification page in the report.

Report a false certification claim

If an appraiser told you they are ASCAA certified and they are not in the registry, email certifiedautoappraisers@gmail.com with the name, business, website, phone number, and what was said. Screenshots and recordings help. You may also report deceptive business practices to the Texas Attorney General Consumer Protection Division or the FTC.
